Use keywords to refine your search

To narrow your search for emails in Gmail, use space-separated keywords. This tells Gmail to search for keywords separately, which means that all keywords must be present in the email for it to show up in search results. Gmail will look for keywords in the subject, body of the message, but also in the title or body of attachments. Moreover, thanks to an OCR reader, the keywords will even be detected in an image.

Use the advanced search for an even more precise search

For an even more precise search of your emails in Gmail, use the advanced search. Access this feature by clicking the arrow to the right of the search bar. Fill in criteria such as sender or recipient, keywords in the subject, message body, or attachments, and exclusions. Use operators such as “minus” (-) to exclude a keyword, “quotation marks” (” “) to search for an exact phrase, or “question mark” (?) to replace a single character.
