Do you use social media, recommendation systems to decide where to eat, or websites to book last-minute vacations or accommodations?

As you know, these sites use machine learning techniques called "targeting" and "profiling" to understand users' interests and offer them products and advertisements based on their preferences. This technology is used to analyze large amounts of data, in this case your personal data. This data is often very sensitive, as it may relate to your location, political opinions, religious beliefs, etc.

The objective of this course is not to take a position "for" or "against" this technology, but to discuss possible future options for the protection of privacy, in particular the risk of disclosure of personal data and sensitive information when used in public applications such as recommendation systems. We know that it is indeed possible to provide technical answers to pressing questions of public interest, it is no coincidence that the new General Data Protection Regulation (or European legislation) GDPR has come into force in May 2018.
