Fight spam and phishing with Gmail

Spam and phishing are common threats that can cause security issues for your Gmail account. Here's how to combat these threats by marking unwanted emails as spam or reporting them as phishing.

Mark an email as spam

  1. Open your Gmail inbox.
  2. Select the suspicious email by checking the box to the left of the message.
  3. Click the “Report Spam” button represented by a stop sign with an exclamation point at the top of the page. The e-mail will then be moved to the “Spam” folder and Gmail will take your report into account to improve the filtering of unwanted e-mails.

You can also open the email and click on the “Report spam” button located at the top left of the reading window.

Report an email as phishing

Phishing is an attempt to deceive you via email with the aim of tricking you into revealing sensitive information, such as passwords or credit card numbers. To report an email as phishing, follow these steps:

  1. Open the suspicious email in Gmail.
  2. Click on the three vertical dots located at the top right of the playback window to open the drop-down menu.
  3. Select “Report Phishing” from the menu. A confirmation message will appear letting you know that the email has been reported as phishing.

By reporting spam and phishing emails, you help Gmail improve its security filters and protect your account as well as those of other users. Stay vigilant and never share sensitive information via email without verifying the authenticity of the sender.
